Notes
- Immigration*: before 17165
- Note*: Life:
It is assumed that David Kaufman immigrated from Germany prior to 1716 with his mother and brother, and that he was too young in 1716 to be a co-purchaser of the Germantown property. He settled in Oley Township, first purchasing land in 1727, and expanded his holdings to over 500 acres by the time of his death. - Note: Biography:
See Kauffman family in Montgomery's Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County In Pennsylvania, URL https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9DF-1F2R?cat=25526133 - Note: Naturalization:
By Pennsylvania law aliens did not have clear title to property. Landholders in Oley valley took an oath of allegiance and were made citizens by an act of the legislature dated 9 Jan 1729/30. In the act they were described as "Protestants who were subjects to the Emperor of Germany."6 - Note: Mother's will:
The 1740 will of Anne Kaufman makes bequests to her son David Kaufman and his children Jacob Kaufman, Anna Kaufman, Mary Kaufman, Barbara Kaufman, and Sussanna Kaufman.7 - Note: Land:
The inventory of David Kaufman's estate listed 350 acres in Oley Township and 175 acres in Maidencreek Township.
The Oley Township property consisted of three purchases:
- 28 Nov 1727 a patent from Jonathan Herbein of a 200 acre tract plus allowances, originally warranted to Herbein 25 Jan 1720 and surveyed that March 7.
- 5 Feb 1733 a warrant from Thomas Penn for 100 acres, lying south of his first tract, surveyed Feb 7.
- 23 Feb 1740 a warrant for a 54 acre 144 perch tract south of his second tract, surveyed April 7, patent 11 Oct 1740.
The Maidencreek Township property of 175 acres was deeded by the proprietors 7 April 1742.
The disposition of a fourth tract in Oley Township is not accounted for: In 1734 a Burgoon Bird and his wife Mary deeded 100 acres in Oley Township to David Kaufman.8,2 - Note: Farm:
The Kauffman farm is about twelve miles east of Reading in Oley Valley in Oley Township.
Kaufman and Kaufman write: "What he [David Kaufman] has left behind is a magnificent farm which is known to this day as one of the finest examples of a colonial farm in Berks County".
The Oley Valley Heritage Association posted an hour and three quarters long YouTube video entitled "The Kauffman Farm of the Oley Valley" of a lecture by historian Jim Lewars. He describes the uniqueness of Oley Valley, the history of the farm and many details of the farm, its history and preservation.9,10 - Note: Death date:
Researchers Kaufman and Kaufman state that David Kaufman died 6 April 1743, while Croll's informant, a Kaufman descendant with access to family papers, states that David Kaufman died January 1762. The 1743 date is supported by the Philadelphia county probate papers; the 1762 date is incorrect.11,12 - Note: Probate:
David Kaufman died intestate.
The Philadelphia County index of administrations lists "1743, Kauffman, David, Book D, page 269". Another index added 1943, No. 105.
An abstract of administrations contains "Veronica Kauffman, widow of David Kauffman, yeoman, dec., and to John Yoder, adms. of David Kauffman, dec., Apr 19, 1743".
The inventory was taken 6 April 1743, stating that David Kaufman left his wife Veronica and six children. The account was filed 3 Jan 1763, with a distribution of one third to the widow, £73.4.4, and £29.5.8 3/4 to each of the five children (unnamed).13,14,15
