Notes
- Note: Misinformation:
Author Charles Fahs Kauffman incorrectly asserted that Ann Kaufman's husband was Johann Kauffman (1680-1733) coming from Strasburg Germany arriving on ship Samuel 17 Aug 1733. She was already in Pennsylvania purchasing land in 1716, and had been described as a widow in 1732.5 - Immigration*: before 17166
- Note*: Life:
Anna Kaufman had immigrated and was a resident of Germantown, Philadelphia county by 1716. She had two known sons, Jacob who was an adult in 1716 and David who was not yet an adult. In her son's naturalization they are described as "Protestants who were subjects to the Emperor of Germany." Nothing more is known of her origins, maiden name, immigration or husband. In 1716 she and her son purchased a prime lot in Germantown, paying a comparatively high price, suggesting some wealth or profit from a prior land sale.7 - Note: Deed:
On 17 Nov 1716 a deed was recorded granting to Anne Kauffman & Jacob Kaufman both of Germantown...Mother & Son", in consideration of £80 silver money of America, two tracts in Germantown, one of 19 1/2 acres and one of 30 1/2 acres. Both lots were laid out as long extremely narrow ribbons, typical of Germantown. The town lot "in today’s terms, began just south of the intersection of Germantown and Chelton Avenues and ran parallel to Chelton Avenue for about 7 city blocks, eastward to near Wissahicken Creek, but it was only about one-half block wide, about 3,600 feet by 238 feet." The Kaufmans could easily have been living there before the date the deed was recorded. Recorded Philadelphia Book of Deeds, E7, Vol. 10.8 - Note: Neighbor:
A 1730 deed recorded to a Christopher Meng for a Germantown property names Anne Cowfman as owning an adjoining property.9 - Note: Jacob:
Anne's son Jacob died accidently 25 Oct 1732, intestate. Letters of Administration were granted to Ann Kauffman, widow of Philadelphia County. (Administration 18, 1732, County of Philadelphia, Pa.)10 - Note: Landholder:
"In 1734 'Ann Coffman' was listed as a 'Landholder of Philadelphia County' with 50 acres."9 - Note: Germantown:
"In 1737 Anne and her son David--of Oley, contributed money toward the building of a wall for what was called 'the lower burying ground' in Germantown."9 - Note: Probate:
Ann Kaufman died testate in 1740. Her probate file contains two wills and an inventory.
The will dated 17 June 1740 is of Anne Cowfman of Germantown, "being in sound health". She bequests most of her estate to her unnamed grandchildren, children of son David Cowfman in Oley in Philadelphia County and his wife "Fronieka".
The will dated 28 Sept 1740 and proved 4 Oct 1740 is of Anne Kaufman of Germantown, "being very sick & weak in body". She bequests her clock and clock case to son David Kaufman. All her estate real and personal is bequeathed to her grandchildren Jacob Kaufman, Anna Kaufman, Mary Kaufman, Barbara Kaufman, and Sussanna Kaufman. Executors Mathis Adams Hogermood, Derick Kizor and David Kaufman. Marked not signed. (Recorded Will 163, 1740, County of Philadelphia, Pa.)
