  • Note*: Biographical sketch:
Montgomery's Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County published in 1909 in the sketch of one of the descendants states:
"His grandfather was Jacob Seltzer, born in 1764 at Womelsdorf, where he carried on farming and kept hotel until his decease in 1825. He was married to Catharine Kauffman, daughter of Jacob, of Oley; shows born in 1766 and died in 1842; and by her he had eight children: William, above; John married Mary Van Reed; Daniel married a Weiser; David married Eliza O. Sheetz and moved to Ohio; Jacob married a Hassinger; Michael married Catharine Hain; Anna remained single; and Elizabeth married George See."9
  • Note: A petition in the 1788 probate file of Jacob Seltzer and a deed of settlement among the heirs both name son Jacob.1,2
  • Note: Uncertain vital dates:
Jacob Seltzer's vital dates are uncertain: His will is dated 3 Feb 1825 and was probated 11 Mar 1825. Steinmetz copied The Chronical of The Times newspaper "Friday March 18, 1825 -- On Sunday the 27th ult. In Womelsdorf, Mr. Jacob Seltzer, in the 61st year of his age", that is, 27 Feb 1825. Jacob Seltzer's gravestone has been read variously. Croll transcribed it as "Sacred to the memory of Jacob Seltzer born Sept. 5th, 1764 and departed this life January 5, 1823, Aged 58 years, 4 months 28 days". Sensenig and Gartner wrote "Row 28 South Side... 9. Seltzer, Jacob, 9/5/1763-1/5/1823". The best photo on FindAGrave can be read as born January 3rd or 5th 1764 or 176? and died January ?? 1823 or 1825. FindAGrave (source unstated) has birth 3 Sep 1764 and death 31 Jan 1825 (aged 60).
