  • Note: "13. Before attempting to compete head-on with The Easy Instructor, Wyeth used his new shape-note font to print Joseph Doll's Leichter Unterricht in der Vokal Musik (1810), aimed at Pennsylvania's German-speaking population. Through this and three later tunebooks, Wyeth established a preference for shape notes among Pennsylvania Germans. German and bilingual tunebooks in shape notes appeared in Pennsylvania as late as 1870."5
  • Note: Brothers Conrad and Joseph Doll both published tunebooks. Joseph's book was sold by brothers Conrad and Jacob. Stapleton wrote:

    "...Then also "Sammlung Geistliche Lieder nebst Melodien," printed and published by Connrad Doll, Lancaster, Pa., 1798, 112 p. "Der Leiche Unterricht von der Vocal music", by Joseph Doll, p. 108, Intro XII., printed by John Wyeth, Harrisburg, Pa, 1810. Do. second ed. 1814? Do. third ed., 1821.
    The above book was for sale by Wyeth the printer, Conrad Doll, of Lancaster, and Jacob Doll, of York, Pa. The Dolls were a musical family. Jacob Doll was chorister of Christ Church at York for many years."6
  • Note: "Departed this life, on Wednesday morning last, Mr. Joseph Doll, clock & watchmaker, of this borough:-A man of unoffending manners and unblemished reputation."3
  • Note: "Married, On Thursday evening last, by the rev Mr. Rauhauser, Dr. Samuel Weistling, junior, to Miss Harriot Doll, daughter of mr. Joseph Doll, all of this borough."7
  • Note: On 3 Dec 1823 William H. Doll, eldest son and heir of Joseph Doll deceased of the borough of Harrisburg, intestate, appeared in Dauphin county court to request the appraisal of a property on Second Street. In his petition he stated that Joseph Doll left no widow but six children, viz. himself, Harriet married to Dr. Samuel Weistling, Catharine married to George Mish?, Emanuel, Samuel and Christian. All were residents of Harrisburg. All were of age except Christian.

    The audit report, filed 23 Aug 1822, valued the estate at $10,876.25 1/2.8
