Notes
- Immigration*: 1741; as a young child with his parents
- Note*: On 15 Apr 1764 "John Doll Jr. and wife" sponsored a baptism at Lancaster First Reformed Church of a son of John Peter and Margaret Rege.
This indicates that John was in Lancaster and married to Elizabeth by this date.
[John Peter Regni married 1762 Lancaster First Reformed Mary Margaret Dauberger.]6 - Note: On 13 March 1768 "John Doll and Elizabeth" sponsored a baptism at Lancaster First Reformed of a son of John Unruh and
Maria Angelica.
[John Unruh married 1761 Lancaster First Reformed Engel Lay, daughter of Ludwig Ley and Maria Anna Trebar or Draewer who had several other children baptized and married at Lancaster First Reformed.]7 - Note: LAND:
On 3 Dec 1778 Jacob Wilhelm and Elizabeth his wife granted to Peter Lewig a thirty one acre tract in Manheim Township, Lancaster County. Recorded 15 March 1764 Lancaster Deeds Book U, page 655. John Doll appears twice in the recited history of the tract:
On 11 May 1765 Henry Gessler and Margret his wife granted to John Doll ten acres, part of the thirty one acres.
On 26 April 1775 the same John Doll and Elizabeth his wife granted the ten acre tract to Jacob Wilhelm "by their Certain Deed Poll endorsed on the Back of their said recited Indenture".
It appears that the 1765 purchase and 1775 sale were not recorded. They are not listed in the Lancaster Deed Book indexes. No were any other deeds for this John Doll in either Lancaster or York counties. (There are John Doll deeds in York county, but they all appear to be for other John Dolls.)
Manheim township is located just north of the city of Lancaster.8,9 - Note: 1780, York Town, York County, Pennsylvania, Tax and Exoneration Lists, entry: Name: Doll, John; Rent: 5; Cows: 1; Trade: Teacher; Valuation £60, Tax: 15 shillings.10
- Note: Chronicles of the Reformed Church Lancaster:
"In 1789, John Doll, a son of the church, who had been teaching school in York, became the schoolmaster, succeeding Mr. Seyffert...The Doll family had been prominent in the church since 1747. John, born in 1746, was now 43 years old and had taught in York before he took the school at First Church. In 1795 the State of Pennsylvania established public schools. Conrad Doll was employed by the Church as its organist. In 1805 it was agreed that his salary should be raised to £18 15s. so that he could support his aged father John Doll."
1798 "This was the year in which John Doll, the schoolmaster, was paid £2 5s. for writing the names of the congregation in a long book."
1806: "January 4, It was resolved that: 'Mr. Doll, because of his age and weak school, and because of the services of Herr Conrad Doll who plays the organ for the congregation shall have his salary raised to £18 15s. 0d. Beginning with the new Year.' The 'weak school' was not so much a fault of Mr. Doll's old age as of the trend of the times. There were a dozen and more English schools available in the town. No one, any longer, wished his children to be handicapped by speaking only German. Only the very pious or the extreme reactionaries insisted on keeping their children in the Church school. Mr. Doll's fee for each pupil was 10s. For 3 months. This was paid by the parents who could afford it and out of the Almosen for paupers."
1807: "on October 16, the old man [school teacher Mr. Doll] died in his 72nd. year."11 - Note: The Lancaster County 'Letters of Administration Index' lists "1807 Doll, John". He is not listed in the will index.12
- Note: Three of Johannes Doll's sons were involved in choral music. Conrad built organs; Conrad and Joseph published song books; Jacob was a chorister.
