Lot bought of James Thomas to son James. One third of estate, real & personal, to wife; one third to children; one third to wife during her widowhood. Phila. wills, Book A, #98, pp. 253-255. FHL #21,721. Abstracted by compiler.1
- Note: John White is, of course, a very common name; there were at least two and possibly four John Whites in Philadelphia & New Castle counties in the 1680s and early 1690s, and others in Chester and Bucks counties. This compiler found no evidence linking John White of the 1683 will to other John White records.
The purchase of the lot from James Thomas was not found in the Philadelphia Deeds Grantor Index (FHL microfilm 21867). However the sale of a property by James White was found, to Wm. Snowdon, in the Grantors Index (FHL 21868): book C3, vol. 5, page 512. Microfilm of book C3 could not be found.
The most prominent John White was a member of the Pennsylvania provincial assembly, representing New Castle 1684, 1685 & 1687, and Philadelphia in 1693. He appears in various New Castle records, including tax on an estate in 1693. As speaker of the assembly he was active in the resistance to Governor John Blackwell in 1688-89. He was closely allied with David Lloyd. David Lloyd and he were appointed the prosecutors in the 1692 case against Quaker separatist George Keith. Political histories do not mention him in events after 1693, but neither do they mention his death.2,3,4,5
