Notes

  • Note*: Published genealogies differ as to the parentage of the Susanna Field who married Benjamin Fairman. Pierce, p. 129, identifies her as the daughter of Benjamin Field, while the usually more authoritative and often cited McCracken, p. 268, identifies her as the daughter of Nathaniel Field. Benjamin and Nathaniel were brothers, sons of Robert and Susanna Field.

This compiler doubts that Nathaniel could have been her father on the basis of marriage dates, Nathaniel marrying in 1701 and Susanna in 1712.

This compiler asserts that the parents of the Susanna Field who married Benjamin Fairman were Benjamin and Experience Field. This assertion is based upon indirect evidence, the witness lists on her siblings' Quaker marriage certificates. Three are available: On brother Robert's certificate the first two witnesses for the groom are Benjamin Field and Susannah Farman. On sister Elizabeth's first certificate the first witnesses for the bride are Robt. Field, Benj. Field and Susanna Fairman. On sister Elizabeth's second certificate the first witnesses for the bride are Rob. Field, Benj. Fairman and Sus. Fairman. On all three certificates various uncles and aunts follow Susanna. In other words Susanna Fairman's name is positioned among her siblings closest relatives. If she were a cousin, less prominent positions would be expected.

In addition, the will of Benjamin Fairman names brother-in-law Benjamin Field.5,6
  • Note: The marriage of a Susannah Fairman to William Hayes in 1742 could possibly be assigned to either Susannah (Field) Fairman, widow of Benjamin, or to her daughter Susannah. Witness "Susanna Hayes" is the first or second witness on the 1747 marriage certificates of daughters Mary and Sarah Fairman, ahead of siblings, suggesting, put not proving, that she is their mother.
