; having declared intentions at Horsham MM; having consent of parents; were married 16th of 12th month 1818 at Upper Dublin.
First witnesses: William Bailey, Tacy Bailey, David Lukens"8 - Note: RESIDENCES:
After their December 1818 marriage Joseph and Martha Bailey moved to Chester county, Pennsylvania. It is said that he engaged in farming. Their movements within the county can be tracked by the location of their children's births, as recorded later in Exeter Meeting records, and, partially, by certificates of removal.
In April 1819 the London Grove meeting recorded the transfer of membership of Joseph and Martha Bailey with certificates of removal from the Abington and Horsham meetings respectively. Their first child was born March 1821 in London Grove township.
In June 1821 the London Grove meeting recorded their request for a certificate to the Goshen Monthly Meeting (about 20 miles northeast). They had four children born in Goshen township 1825 through 1829. Goshen Meeting recorded their residence as East Goshen.
In April 1830 a certificate was issued by Goshen meeting for Joseph Bailey and his family to Uwchlan Monthly Meeting (about 8 miles northwest).
There are gaps in this record of meeting membership transfers and residences. A child was born in 1831 in London Grove, and two in Westtown township in 1834 and 1836. Joseph is said to have worked at the Lukens mill in Coatsville from 1838 to 1844.
In April 1844 the Exeter Monthly Meeting received the family on certificate from the London Grove meeting. This date coincides with his purchase of the Pine Iron Works, in Douglas township, Berks county, Pennsylvania, where Joseph and Martha lived the rest of their lives.7,9,10,11,12 - Note: BRANDYWINE IRON WORKS:
Martha's brother Dr. Charles Lukens and his wife Rebecca Webb Pennock Lukens took over operation of the Brandywine Iron Works from Rebecca's father soon after their marriage in 1813. They made major improvements to the mill, and when he died in 1825, she continued to run the business until 1847, with increasing success.
Joseph Bailey and his son Charles L. Bailey had some part in running the business for Rebecca Webb Pennock Lukens.
A biographical sketch of the son Charles L. Bailey states
"His father [Joseph Bailey] was born in 1796 and settled in Chester county in 1819, where he carried on farming until 1838, when he engaged in the iron business at the old Lukens’ mill in Coatesville and there manufactured boiler plate for six years. ...
"Charles L. Bailey, eldest son, obtained his early education at the Westtown School, Chester county, and for sometime thereafter, was a clerk in the drugstore of Thomas Evans & Co., of Philadelphia. His career in the iron business began in 1838 as a clerk for his father at Coatesville, where he became thoroughly conversant with the details of the business carried on at that place. He removed with his parents to Berks county..."
Judith Scheffler's article on Rebecca Lukens is highly recommended. In it she states "In 1840 he [Solomon Lukens] was succeeded as manager of the mill by Joseph Bailey, another brother-in-law." And "He [Abraham Gibbons, Jr.] began in 1842 by replacing Joseph Bailey as superintendent of the mill".
The Daily Pottstown Ledger (Monday May 28 1883, p. 1), in its obituary of Joseph Bailey stated that "...In 1844 he sold his interest in the firm of Rebecca W. Lukens & Co., iron manufactures, Coatesville, Chester county, and purchased of the assignees of John P. Rutter, the farm and forge then, and since known as Pine Iron Works."13,14 - Note: PINE IRON WORKS
Joseph Bailey is best know as an ironmaster, as owner of Pine Iron Works.
Pine Iron Works, earlier called Pine Forge, was located in Douglas township, Berks county, on the Manatawny River about ten miles up from its confluence with the Schuylkill River at Pottstown, Montgomery county. The works was a water powered mill which rolled iron into plates.
As stated in his May 28th 1883 obituary:
"...In 1844 he sold his interest in the firm of Rebecca W. Lukens & Co., iron manufactures, Coatesville, Chester county, and purchased of the assignees of John P. Rutter, the farm and forge then, and since known as Pine Iron Works. The tract consisted of 350 acres of excellent land, a four-story grist mill, forge and other buildings. He leased the forge to the late Henry Potts, of this borough, who operated it one year. In 1845 Mr. Bailey demolished the forge and erected the rolling mill, which has ever since been run with great success. Deceased retired from active business just twenty-five years ago. For many years the Bailey brand of iron was prominent in the markets of the country, and, indeed, continues to be to this day, as four of the five sons are prominent manufactures of iron in its various departments. He was at the time of his death, probably the oldest iron manufacturer in the State."
