2) 1827-28 Numerous instances where Joseph notified members that they were disowned.7 - Note: A schism occurred in the Society of Friends around 1827 resulting in a split between Orthodox and Hicksite meetings. Our Joseph Whitall of Woodbury may have been the Joseph Whitehall who had a part in the schism as it developed:
In the ninth month 1822 some elders of the Philadelphia meeting met regarding the impending visit of preacher Elias Hicks. "Richard Jordan and Joseph Whitehall, are present, and can state to you what they heard from himself. Then, the above named persons, one after the other, rose and stated what they said were the doctrines held by Elias Hicks." The Philadelphia elders wrote Hicks in the twelfth month 1822 of their concerns.
Hicks responded "Having been charged by you of unsoundness of principle and doctrine, founded on reports spread among the people in an unfriendly manner, and contrary to the order of our discipline, by Joseph Whitehall, as stated in the letter from you dated the 19th instant; and as these are charges not literally true, being founded on his own forced and improper construction of my words, I deny them..."

It is likely that Joseph Whitall of Deptford and Joseph Whitehall of the schism were one and the same: Given the phonetic spelling of the names in the era, given Joseph Whitall's frequent visits to other meetings including New York, given his role as elder and preacher at Woodbury, given his proximity to Philadelphia. - Note: Woodbury Meeting minutes:
