"Thomas P. Moore, Aged Tobacconist, Dies Suddenly

Was Picturesque Figure of Decade Ago and Served Once As Mercantile Appraiser

Thomas Moore, for 42 years proprietor of "Moore's Smoke House" located on the northeast corner of Fifth and Penn sts., died at his home 307 Penn ave., West Reading, at 1.15 p. m., yesterday. Although in ill health for some time, Mr. Moore succumbed after but ten days of serious illness. He was probably Reading's best known cigar store owner. he was 72 years old.
The store was one of the city's favorite gathering places, and at almost any hour could be found there prominent men of the city who had stopped in to buy a cigar and join in the debate. Around the walls were panels frescoed with poetry from the old English poet, Moore. Mr. Moore himself was one of the picturesque citizens of the times and usually joined in the round table discussion. Mr. Moore always gave his occupation as 'tobaccoist.'
    Retired in 1919
The 'Moore Smoke House' made way in 1919 for the present chain store after Mr. Moore retired from active business. The ownership of the building however remained in his hands and with the aid of a son, Robert P. Moore, he managed it until its sale two years ago.
Mr. Moore was born in Womelsdorf, the son of the late William and Mary (Doll) Moore. He received his early education in the borough schools and moved to this city when he was 15 years old. He was employed as a clerk in the Kline Eppihimer & Co., store and remained there for several years.
    Was Mercantile Appraiser
Then he went into business for himself, conducting a cigar and tobacco store next door to the Mansion House. he remained there until 1884 when he moved across the street to the Moore corner, and conducted the store until he retired. He was active in Republican politics and served as mercantile appraiser in 1921.
He is survived by his widow, Ada E. (Mellert) Moore, a son Robert P.; two daughters, Lillian M., wife of Robert Heilman, San Diego, Cal.; and Ludema, wife of William F. Drehs, at home and two grandchildren, Robert Heilman jr., and Thomas Moore Heilman, of San Diego. Mr. Moore was a member of Reading Lodge, No. 549, F. and A.M., the Washington Library Association and the Presbyterian church. Undertaker Seidel will arrange the funeral."4
