Notes

  • Note*: All that is known of Charles Moore and his son William comes from three wills:

James Moore, Charles' father, in his 1820 will wrote "I bequeath to my sons William Moore & John Moore & Charles Moore each Two Hundred Dollars"

Lydia Moore, Charles' sister, in her 1836 will leaves "to my brother Charles Moore, the sum of thirty dollars"

Frances Moore, Charles' sister in her 1858 will leaves "to my brother Charles Moore if alive the sum of 30 dollars if not to be paid to his son Wm Moore also to Wm Moore the sum of 50 dollars".

The "Legacies Paid" portion of sister Frances' estate lists payments:
"To William Moore, son of Chas. Moore (brother of testatrix) $30
To William Moore, son of Chas. Moore (brother of testatrix) $50"1,2,3
  • Note: Charles Moore's identity is unclear.

His father, in his will, spells out "Nancy Gray daughter of my late wife by her former husband". So in his will when he calls Charles "my Son", it seems safe to conclude that he is not using the word "son" for step-son.

Lydia Moore, in her will, calls her half-sister Nancy Moore her "sister". So in calling Charles her "brother", she might mean "brother" or "half-brother". Likewise, Frances Moore, in her will, refers to two half-sisters as "sister". And the same terminology is used in the 'Legacies Paid' portion of the account. So again, we do not know if Charles is her brother or half-brother.

Also Charles is not named in the James Moore family bible, the most troubling evidence.

This compiler is led to think it more likely that Charles was a son of James, either illegitimate or by a previous marriage. It is represented that way in this database, but this is entirely speculation.

Also we do not even know if Charles came to America. It does seems likely that he died before 1858, as the legacies from Frances were paid to Charles' son.
