Mrs. Joseph Cook Dies in San Juan Capistrano
Mrs. Joseph W. Cook, 80, formerly a leader in Redlands organizations, and a former Presbyterian missionary to Persia, died today at San Juan Capistrano where she had been living with her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Lane.
In Redlands she served in various capacities in the leadership of the Presbyterian church, the YWCA, and the House of Neighborly Service. She belonged to the PEO Sisterhood.
Born Alice Ensign, she was a native of
Chicago, received her early education at Oak Park, Ill., and at the University of Illinois studied to become a school teacher. She affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma and was a member for 50 years.
Sent to Persia by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions as a teacher she met a medical missionary, Dr. Joseph Cook, and they were married there in 1915.
With the clouds of World War I spreading they returned to the United States in 1917. The trip had to be made by way of the Trans-Siberian railroad to Vladivostok and then across the Pacific. Caring for their nine-month old baby, (now Dr. joseph Cook) proved to be quite an adventure.
They lived here, at first, and then in Banning where Dr. Cook was in medical practice. In 1929 they returned to missionary work in Persia (now Iran) but he died in 1932 and Mrs. cook and the four children came home, living in Redlands.
All four children survived and they are: Mrs. Lane; Dr. Cook of Citrus Heights, which is near Sacramento; Mrs. Gifford Bunker of San Carlos, Calif; and Edgar S (Ned) Cook, a United Airlines pilot, San Pedro.
Mrs. Cook was a partner in the Cook-Orchards company, which owns and operates about 60 acres of Redlands citrus.
Funeral arrangements are pending.4
