- Note*: Coffin for Christian:
The 10 Feb 1762 account for the estate of Hermanus Walborn includes an expense for a coffin for Christian Walborn. This compiler asserts that the coffin was for Christian Walborn the son of Hermanus Walborn born 1737. The reasoning is as follows:
Seven Christian Walborns were known to have lived in the region in the period up to 1762, (Walborn book numbers in parenthesis). They are the only known candidates for the coffin:
1) Christian Wilhelm son of immigrant Johannes, bapt. 1692, died in 1769 (1-2)
2) Christian son of Christian Wilhelm, born 1739, died 1814 (1-2-11)
3) John Christian son of Hermanus, 1737-?, nothing further known (1-5-4)
4) Christian son of John Adam, born 1750, died 1837 (1-2-1-3)
5) Christian son of Martinus, born 1758, died 1845 (1-2-8-1)
6) Christian son of Christian, married Elizabeth Lesher, born about 1759, died 1841 (1-5-4-1)
7) Christian son of Christian, born 1761, nothing further known (1-2-11-1)
There are only two of these for whom events after their births are unknown, narrowing the candidates to:
3) John Christian son of Hermanus, born 1737, nothing further known (1-5-4)
7) Christian son of Christian, born 1761, nothing further known (1-2-11-1)
It is very unlikely that the estate of Hermanus (1-5) would have paid for a coffin for his one year old great-nephew (1-2-11-1) whose father (Christian 1740-1814) and grandfather (Christian 1692-1769) were both living and of means.
This compiler concludes that the coffin was for John Christian son of Hermanus, born 1737 (1-5-4). He then would have died between 1753 and 1762.
This conclusion is at odds with Walborn family historian Herman Walborn (p. 93).5 - Note: No probate:
If this Christian Walborn died as an adult with a wife and one or two children, then he might have had some probate record.
No Berks County probate records were found for this Christian Walborn.6 - Note: Not taxed:
Christian Walborn does not appear in the tax lists for Tulpehocken Twp. Berks Co. for the years available between 1767 and 1785, where his younger brothers George and Michael do appear.7 - Note: Militia service - inconclusive:
Christian Walborn of Tulpehocken Berks Co. does not appear in Pennsylvania Archives Militia lists. Three Christians do appear, one each in Bethel and Heidelberg Townships Lancaster county and one in Bethel Township Berks County.8,9 - Note: Walborn book assertions - Father-in-law of Elisabeth Lescher:
Tulpehocken church records document a 1786 marriage: "Christian Walborn, legitimate son of Christian Walborn, and Elisabeth Lescher". In family historian Herman Walborn's book it is asserted that this Johann Christian Walborn (1-5-4) is the Christian, father of the groom.
This compiler has found no evidence or other claim supporting this assertion.10,11 - Note: Walborn book assertions - Husband of Christine Heberling:
Tulpehocken church records document a 1786 marriage: "Oct. 17, Christian Walborn, widower, and Christine Heberling". In family historian Herman Walborn's book it is asserted that this Johann Christian Walborn (1-5-4) is the Christian Walborn, widower groom.
This compiler has found no evidence or other claim supporting this assertion.
Christine Heberling has not been identified by this compiler. The 1754 Berks County estate of Valentine Heberling names his wife and three daughters; the 1779 Berks County estate of John Heberling. None of these name a Christine. In the six Berks County Heberling estates from 1800 to 1850, only one (Thomas 1850) names a Christine - as mother of the deceased, so not a fit.10,12,13 - Note: Walborn book assertions - Possible father of Anna Maria Knoebleson Walborn
Tulpehocken church records document a 1794 marriage: "[Date not given], Johannes Rith, single, and Maria Kobel, widow"
Herman Walborn's book states: "1-5-4-2 Anna Maria Knoebleson Walborn m-in 1794 to Johannes Reith. Believed to have been d/o - John Christian Walborn b-7/1/1737, or Daniel Walborn who d-1790 [1-1-1, p. 73, 78]."
This compiler could find no evidence supporting Herman Walborn's suggestion. No Knoeble / Walborn connection could be found. The only Kobel widow found was Maria Kobel, with maiden name Sholl, widow of Jacob Kobel who died November 1793. Also there are no recorded baptisms in the area of an Anna Maria daughter of a Christian Walborn young enough to have married in 1796.10,14,15 - Note: This Johann Christian Walborn is numbered (1-5-4) in the Herman Walborn book.16
