Notes

  • Note*: Emma Witmer wrote of her father: "The year before her birth [Agnes', 1855], finding his father's new wife completely insupportable, George had run away to South America at the age of sixteen, discarding both family and religion. He prospered there in business, and only returned to his county in order to enlist on the Confederate side in the Civil War. Now, in 1869...He came to beg his father's presence at his wedding, a civil ceremony to be performed by the Mayor of Savannah."

John Lukacs wrote of this event: "He asked his father to come to his wedding in Savannah, where he was about to marry a divorced woman in a civil ceremony."5,6
  • Note: The University of Pennsylvania holds personal papers of Agnes Repplier, and a portion of the description states:
"There are three files of correspondence dated 1869, 1870, and 1873-1874 written by Emma's father, J. George Repplier (who was Agnes Repplier's half-brother) to his fiancee, and later his wife, Fannie Levy Repplier. Fannie Levy lived in Savannah, Georgia, while George Repplier worked in New York and Boston."
