Notes
- Note*: "Benjamin Clark one of the earliest settlers had come from London with his father Benjamin Clark who was a stationer in London. They settled in Perth Amboy where Benjamin Senr had a stationery store and it is said 'good books and materials could always be found there'. Benjamin Clark Jr. in 1696 purchased 1200 acres of land at Smith[?] Angle[?] of Stony Brook, and built the first house, which is still standing in what's called 'the Martha Clark Farm".
His wife was Anne daughter of James Giles of Bound Brook. He was a surveyor and an able and intelligent man. He was a most active and useful man in the meeting and also the Colony, serving as a member of the General Assembly. His descendents were attendees of this meeting for many generations and his grand-son Benjamin Clark the fourth was a prominent minister and traveled much in this part of the country and in Canada."3 - Note: "Our great-grandmother [Ann (Copper) Whitall] herself thus speaks of another branch of her family, in a diary she kept in 1761:
'It is with me to write of my grandfather...the only son of his father and mother, his name was Benjamin Clark, Benjamin and Ann Clark were his father and mother. He wrote much about the negroes and was much concerned about keeping them as slaves...It is thirty years now since he was so much concerned about them. My father's name was John Cooper and my mother's name Ann. His father and mother were William and Mary Cooper, all English people.'
The grandfather, Benjamin Clark,...was born 5th month, 13th, 1670, and was the son of Benjamin Clark and Ann Phipps, (daughter of Thomas Phipps), who were married at Redding, in Berkshire, England, and must have removed to America soon after. On 12th month, 25th, 1689, their son Benjamin married Ann Giles, daughter of Thomas Giles, of Brandberry, New England. The oldest daughter of this marriage, Ann, born 4th month, 15, 1691, was our great-grandmother's mother, and married John Cooper, son of William and Mary Cooper."4 - Note: "1742-3, March 15. Clarke, Benjamin, Sen'r, of Stoney Brooke, Middlesex Co., yeoman; will of. Children - James, Ann Cooper, Elizabeth Lord, Mary Braley and John. Real estate in Somerset Co.
