Robert Gray1

M, #78, b. between 1769 and 1771
  • Birth*: between 1769 and 1771; Ireland; Birth year range is a guess. Based on his mother's age and the date of her second marriage, he was quite likely born between 1748 and 1771. Given that he is listed last in the deed of settlement, he was more likely born between 1769 and and 1771.

Notes

  • Note*: The 1841 will of Robert's sister Ann Gray of Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania states:
"To my Grand Niece Ann Grey daughter of Andrew Grey one hundred and fifty dollars.
To Ann Elliot, Frances Elliot and Margaret Green, daughters of my late Brother Robt. Grey, Fifty dollars each."

The 1841 will of Robert's half-brother William Moore of Lebanon, Pennsylvania states:
"Item: I give and bequeath unto John L. Gray of Nanticoke Mills in Upper Canada, in cash, Two thousand Dollars.
Item: I give and bequeath unto the three Sisters of said John L. Gray, and to his Brother's widow, in cash, one thousand Dollars each, to be paid to said John L. Gray, for their use, which he is to transmit to them respectively.
Item: I give and bequeath unto James Elliot of the Borough of Lebanon, Twenty Shares of Stock in the Susquehanna Canal Company."

[Note that the name "John L. Gray" is clearly spelled with initial "L" in the original will, and is spelled "John S. Gray" in the transcription recorded in Lebanon County will books.]2,3
  • Note: List of children of Robert Gray:
It is clear from the will of Ann Gray that Robert has daughters Ann, Frances and Margaret.

It is supposed by the compiler of this database that these are the three sisters of John L. Gray referred to in the will of William Moore. By this supposition then John L. Gray is included as a child of Robert Gray. And then also Andrew Gray, the deceased brother of John, is also supposed to be a child of Robert Gray.

This compiler has found no further evidence about John L. Gray or the other supposed children of Robert Gray, so this line of reasoning is not at all proven.
  • Note: James Elliot may have been a child of either Ann Elliot or Frances Elliot. But no evidence of this relationship has been found. [See the James Elliot entry in this database.]
