A significant battle, often referred to as the Battle that Saved Washington, D. C., was fought at Monocacy in July, 1864 - just shortly before Moore was stationed there."

  • Note: Letters:

Huntington Library catalog description, paragraph describing James / Moore letters:

"The next lengthy series 28 are letters from Maria N. James to Dr. John P. Moore, dated between 1869 and 1871. The correspondence between James and Moore is that of friends, though perhaps not strictly. James’ letters betray her jealousy over Moore’s time spent with mutual female friends in company, and James’ laments that the two of them will never be more than friends. James works in secretarial positions, and often wishes she had more time to be sociable and be seen. Again, these letters might be of use to scholars interested in the history of 19th century courtship and love (though this was strictly flirtation, it is clear that James feels deeply for Moore)."7
  • Note: Dutch Colony:

In 1871 Dr. J. P. Moore was a member of a group from Berks County led by Maj. H. D. Markley, which with another group from Lancaster county formed the town of Osborne, Osborne Co., Kansas. He was elected secretary of the colony at its formation, and played an active role that year.8

  • Note: Obituary published in Reading Eagle March 10, 1890

    "Deaths and Funerals
Dr. John P. Moore, formerly a clerk with Kline & Eppihimer, this city, died at Marshfield, Oregon, of acute inflammation of the brain, March 6th. A telegram was received by his brother, Capt. Wm. G. Moore, at Womelsdorf, announcing the above fact. Deceased was a son of the late Dr. Moore, of Womelsdorf, and after he left the above firm he read medicine. After graduating he left Womelsdorf with Major Markley's Kansas colony. He subsequently left there for Chicago. From there he went to Bloomington, Ill., where he was for some years car accountant of the Chicago & Alton R. R., but the duties being too confining he resigned his position and subsequently went to California, practicing medicine for several years. M. L. Golden, a druggist from Marshfield, Oregon, meeting the doctor in San Francisco, persuaded him to accompany him to his home in the Coos river country. Here he was building up a nice practice and had made many friends, when death called him away. He leaves 3 brothers, Wm. G., James M., and Thomas P., and one sister, Mrs. E. H. Pilgram, wife of Rev. P. Pilgram, of Irwin, this state. If possible he remains will be brought in and interred on the family plot in Womelsdorf cemetery."13
  • Note: Clipping from "Coos Bay News," dated 3/12/1890
" Dr. John P. Moore died at Marshfield on Thursday of acute softening of the brain. He came to the bay about the 1st of November from San Diego, where he had practice for two years. He was in delicate health for some time, and of late failed rapidly. Dr. Moore was born in Pennsylvania, where he lived until coming to the coast during the San Diego boom. F. A. Golden notified the brothers in Pennsylvania of his sickness and death; and assisted by others here showed every attention to the unfortunate man, who was a stranger in a strange land. All that kindness could suggest and medical skill could do, was done for him, and when the inevitable came he was decently interred and the handsome coffin in which the remains were encased was covered with flowers by many ladies who thus appropriately expressed their sympathies. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Friday, and services were conducted at the Baptist church, Rev. F. E. Scofield officiating. Deceased was about 45 years old, and had been a sergeant in Co. A, 195th Penn. Vol., and saw some service during the war. A firing squad from Baker Post, G. A. R., attended the funeral and fired volleys over the grave."5
