  • Note*: An article, written in 1907, about the Female Benevolent Society of Lancaster included biographical sketches of the founding members, including Lydia Reynolds, who was the secretary, and her mother Jane Moore:

    "Jane Moore, the wife of Captain Samuel Moore, was before marriage Miss Jane Fulton, born Bathmelton, Ireland, August 1768, and died in Lancaster, May 10, 1847. On September 1, 1791, she married Samuel Moore, a captain in the Pennsylvania Line in the army of the Revolution. She was the mother of Lydia Moore Reynolds, and was a prominent member of the Presbyterian church."2

    In 1825 daughter Lydia Moore Reynolds applied for a land warrant. Depositions were given by Lydia, by Captain John Weiderman, and by the regiment commander Col. Thomas Craig. Land Warrant No. 1148 was issued 21 Dec 1825 to Lydia Moore Reynolds, daughter and heir of Capt. Saml. Moore, entitling her to 300 acres.

    In 1838 Jane Moore, widow of Captain Samuel Moore of the third Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line, was awarded a pension of $475.54 per annum under the Act of 1838. Depositions were made by the rector of the Episcopal church, by Lancaster resident Adam Reigart, and by the widow, and reference was made to the 1825 depositions. In her declaration Jane Moore testified that her husband Samuel Moore died at Shippensbury Pennsylvania 12 September 1795, leaving [herself] his widow and one child daughter Lydia then wife of John Reynolds. In the preface to her 22 Aug 1838 declaration, Jane Moore was aged seventy years.

    In 1843 Jane Moore, aged seventy five years, applied for and was awarded continued benefits under the Act of 1843.

    Lancaster attorney and future president James Buchanan helped prepare and transmit the 1825 and 1838 applications.5
  • Note: Residences:

    Samuel Moore and his wife lived in Lebanon, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania. After his death she apparently went to live with her daughter Lydia in Lancaster. Jane moved with the Reynolds to Cornwall, Lebanon County when John Reynolds became manager of the iron furnace there. She died while they resided at Cornwall. Later the Reynolds returned to Lancaster.
  • Note: Will of Jane Moore of Cornwall in County of Lebanon Pennsylvania, dated 20 Jan 1840. Makes bequests to her only surviving child Lydia Moore Reynolds the wife of John Reynolds of Cornwall. Also bequests to the daughters of Lydia Reynolds. Names grandson Samuel Moore Reynolds. Executor son-in-law John Reynolds.
