Notes

  • Note*: Ann Gray in her 1841 will made the following bequest, among many others:
"to Samuel Moore of Stauchsburg one hundred dollars".

Frances Moore in her 1848 will made the following bequest, among many others:
"to the children of my cousin Samuel Moore late of Stouchsburg the sum of 200 dollars..to my cousin Fanny Hartzler the sum of 100 dollars exclusive of her part of the former bequest"

The 'Legacies Paid' portion of her estate papers includes the following:
"To children of Samuel Moore late of Stouchsburg cousin of testatrix as follows:
    James Moore...
    Samuel Moore...
    Mary A. Searle...
    Catharina M. Taylor...
    Rachel Moore...
    John Moore...
    Frances Hertzler...
To Fanny Hertzler, cousin of testatrix..."5,1
  • Note: Samuel Moore's parents and origins are unknown. His children, consistently, in ten different census recordings, reported that their father's birthplace as Pennsylvania, so that much seems fairly certain. One document states that he was born in Reading. But that source, his son John's 1906 death certificate, completed by a grand-daughter's husband one hundred and twenty years after the event, needs further corroboration. Any help finding supporting information would be appreciated.

Some Ancestry Family Trees state that Samuel's father was named John Moore, but none, found so far, give an iota of evidence linking the names.

Newspapers: In August 1817 "William Moore and Samuel Moore" announced the "dissolution of partnership...by mutual consent", and requested debtors and creditors to meet with Wm. Moore at his store in Reading. Nothing earlier is known about this partnership. In April 1818 they were still publishing announcements asking their debtors to pay.

Recorded Berks Co. Miscellaneous Vol. A1, p. 20.

Other Samuel: This Samuel Moore of Stouchsburg (1786-1848) is not to be confused with Samuel Moore of Lebanon (1748-1795).
