Notes

  • Note*: Immigrant Casper Wister in his biographical note "A Short Report" names his grandfather Andres Wüster, and states that he was a hunter living in the village of Neunkirchen, in the "Mospacher Ambt", a district in the mountains two hours from Heidelberg in the Palatinate, now Germany.

Andreas Wüster had moved from Crailsheim, a city in Württemberg, first to Bruchhausen, and then to Neunkirchen. The children of Andreas Wüster and his wife Anna were all baptized (1665 - 1687) at the Reformed church at Neunkirchen.

In 1653, Andreas Wüster at age 26 obtained a position as forester at Neunkirchen. This was a government position, with the responsibility to oversee the use of the elector's forest resources in that district, to provide game for the elector's kitchens, and to assist with hunts. He served first in the reign of elector Karl Ludwig (1648-1680), starting just after the end of the Thirty Years War, a period of repopulation and economic rebuilding. His salary stagnated. In 1680, after the death of the then elector, serving under a 2nd Karl (1680-1685), he received a promotion to chief forester, with significantly increased salary and responsibilities, overseeing the districts of Dilsberg, Mosbach and Boxberg, including the heavy forests around Heidelberg. The death of the 2nd Karl brought the reign of Philipp Wilhelm (1685-90), along with war with France in 1688, and the torching of Heidelberg and many villages in 1689 and 1693. Salaries lapsed. Foresters mediated the conflicting demands of government and citizenry for timber and game.5
