Notes

  • Note*: Given name - In all the known baptism records for their children, Frederick Hummel's wife is identified as Regina. But in his will he gives his wife's name as Rachel. Likewise, with all the deeds found by this compiler, with one exception, she is named and signs, or rather marks, as Rachel. The one exception shows that Regina and Rachel are one and the same person. In that one deed, throughout the text of the deed she is called Regina, but then marks as Rechel (Dauphin, 1N:591).7
  • Note: Parentage - Rachel is said to be the daughter of Jacob Rickert in various sources, specifically the Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Kelker's History of Dauphin County, Fisher's Central Pennsylvania Marriages, researcher Janet Welsh's paper, and various DAR applications.

Candidate names are Richard, Rickert, Reigert and numerous variations.

There were three or four contemporary men with similar names living in what are now Dauphin and Lebanon counties. But this compiler has found no evidence identifying Rachel's surname as Rickert, nor evidence as to which one might be Rachel's father. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Note: By indenture dated 1 May 1793 Frederick Hummel of Derry Twp. Dauphin county, yeoman, and Regina his wife granted unto Andrew Shredly of the same place, in consideration of £65, a certain tract situate in said township containing eleven acres on one side of Bigg Road and two on the other. Signed by "Fredk Hummel" and by her mark "Rechel Hummel". Indenture acknowledged by Frederick Hummel and Regina his wife on same date.
Recorded Nov 14 1804 Dauphin County Deeds Vol. 1N, p. 591-593. Viewed on FHL microfilm 21266.
  • Note: Birth date - A tombstone chart posted on Ancestry by 'weneverwrite' 1 Sept 2010 lists Rachel's age at death as "78-8-8". Photographs of Rachel's gravestone posted on the web are practically illegible. From photos of other gravestones, we know that Egle, in his gravestone listing, did not list age at death where present, but rather, listed the calculated birth date. So presumably the birth dates given in all the sources quoted here are calculated from the gravestone age at death.
  • Note: Marriage - Rachel and Frederick are said by Janet Welsh to have married in 1779. But this compiler has been unable to find any church or minister's record.4
