Notes

  • Note*: Newspaper story, North American, Philadelphia, 16 March 1844:
"Murderous Outrage. --Henry Taylor, the man who was detected in picking pockets in the State House yard on Monday, was brought before the Mayor yesterday, and after an examination, was fully committed on a charge of having attempted to rob and murder Joseph M. Repplier, four weeks since. Mr. Repplier was passing along Tenth street, near Spruce, at a late hour at night, to his residence in Lombard street below Tenth, when Taylor, who had waylaid him, knocked him down by a blow to the head, just above the temple, from a shoemaker's hammer, and then tried to strip him of his cloak. The murderous instrument cut through Mr. Repplier's cap, and made a shocking wound in the head, from which he has ever since been confined. Taylor, who has been working some months in this city as a shoemaker, proves to be an old convict."7
