Notes

  • Note*: In his biography of Agnes Repplier, George Stewart Stokes writes:

"John George Repplier, originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, had been living in Philadelphia for some years. It was there that he managed the retailing of coal for a mining business in which, with his three brothers, he was a partner. At one time, many years later, the Repplier brothers' coal lands near Pottsville were valued at more than a half million dollars. Charles, John George, George and Joseph rightly looked upon themselves as men of some substance." (p. 3-4)

"About the year 1863 the Repplier family moved to a large home at Twentieth and Chestnut Streets...built for [Mrs. Repplier] by her husband." In 1865 Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession passed by a block away. (p. 16)

"One day [about 1871] Mr. Repplier announced simply and undramatically that he had lost his money...he had sold his coal holdings...He had invested it in iron...He had invested his money in a foundry down on the Delaware River, and the venture had proved unsuccessful...he could perhaps go back in the coal business as representative for one of the larger New York firms. It would be only on a commission basis." (p. 46)7
  • Note: Jacob B. Lancaster and John George Repplier must have been friends:
    - Jacob was married to Belinda McGauley, sister of John's first wife Mary McGauley.
    - Jacob witnessed John's first marriage, to Mary McGauley.
    - John appears to have named his second son after Jacob.
    - Jacob & Belinda's daughter Susan P. Lancaster married John's brother Joseph.
    - John and his brother Charles witnessed a 17 March 1860 codicil to Jacob's will.
    - Jacob's father Thomas Lancaster appears to have married John's sister-in-law Mary Ann McGauley Keough.
