Education at St. Patrick's Parish began in October, 1854, with the arrival of five Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Sister Vincentia Repplier, Sister Leontine Cissel, St. Mary Dougherty, and Sister Mary Virginia made up the staff of the school, exclusively for girls, in a two story brick house on Second Street near Chartres. The property of the Haskins brothers, including the house, served as a school for about a year and is still standing.
  • Note: ""Although there were several daughters in the Repplier family, the only one to be remembered for any special reason was the eldest. She had been educated in France as a Sister of Charity, and according to family tradition, she was the first to introduce into this country the cornette, or hugh winged bonnet, that distinguishes her order today..."4
