Notes

  • Note*: Richard Wall and family were granted a certificate of removal from a monthly meeting in Gloucestershire, England, 26th of 4th month 1682. The certificate was received at the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting 10th month 1682. He owned 600 acres in Cheltenham Township, Philadelphia county. Richard Wall senior's house was used as a meeting house by the Society of Friends. The meeting was known as Dublin Meeting and later Abington. He died testate; his will is dated 1 mo. 15, 1697/98 (Philadelphia, Book B, p. 174).

Richard Wall's son Richard owned 100 acres adjacent to his father's land, and a large tract in Chester County. Richard junior died before his father, 2 mo. 6, 1689, intestate (Admin. Book A, p. 63).

Excepting 6 acres left to the Friends, Richard Wall senior left his estate to his granddaughter Sarah Shoemaker.1
  • Note: Will abstract:
    WALL, RICHARD.
    January 15, 1697/8. February 9, 1701/2. B. 174.
    Friend Wm. Bubb.
Executrix: Granddaughter Sarah, wife of George Shoemaker.
Witnesses: Samuel Richardson, Evan Morris, Richard Townsend.4
  • Note: Horace Mather Lippincott (1877-1967), a Quaker editor and historian, wrote an article on Richard Wall and George Shoemaker. He provides additional information on the wives of both Richard Wall senior and junior. Lippincott states:
Richard Wall senior "may have married Margery Fletcher of Avening Parish in 1654 [citing Avening Parish Register]. If so, Margery died, and he married some time in the summer of 1658, Joan Wheel [citing Records of Gloucester Monthly Meeting].
"The children of this marriage were Joan, baptized March 19, 1659 [citing Hasfield Parish Register], Joseph, and Arthur, who died in 1659 and 1660, respectively [citing Gloucester Monthly Meeting Records]. Joan may have been the Joan who died January 1676 [citing Records of Frenchay meeting near Bristol]. Richard Wall, Jr., may very well have been the son of Margery Fletcher, since he was married to Joan Bubb (some records have it Elizabeth) of Tirly, Gloucestershire, in the summer of 1677. If he was the son of Joan Wheel, he was only 19 at the time of his marriage [citing Records of Stoke Orchard Monthly Meeting]."

Note that Benjamin H. Shoemaker, in his book on page 21, states that Sarah Wall was the daughter of Richard, Jr., and Rachel Wall.2
