Notes

  • Note*: Removals in Abington Meeting Minutes:

25th 12th mo 1711/12: "John Williams produced a Certificate from Radnor being removed from thence to Germantown."

27th 4th mo 1715: "Whereas there hath been a difference between Derick Johnson & John Williams, Friends have labored much between them in order that they might be reconciled: which at last proved effectual, & they do forgive each other for their harsh words, & are sorry that they uttered unsavoury words, Especially by John Williams given."

29th 6th mo 1715: "A Certificate was granted John Williams to remove to Merrion."

27th 2dth mo 1724: "At this meeting John Williams Lately Removed from Radnor Produced a Certificate for him & his family which was Read & Accepted."7
  • Note: Lands: John Williams apparently inherited the two properties his father had been allotted in the Welsh Tract. The 76 1/2 acre property in Merion Township was sold by John Williams to Cadwallader Morgan, who owned an adjacent property. The deed is indexed as Book C2, vol. 5, p. 298. Shoemaker stated the price as £50 and the date as 4 mo. 18, 1694; Browning had the same day but 1684. This compiler could not locate the deed. The 78 acre property in Goshen Township was sold to Edward Price in 1697. See abstract below.

According to Shoemaker, John Williams purchased 133 acres in Cheltenham township in 1716, and added 93 acres in 1724, and that he held land in Bristol township, believed to have come from his father-in-law Aret Klincken.

John William bequeathed all his lands to his son Anthony.8,9,10,11
  • Note: Clarence V. Roberts' abstract of John William's will:
"Will of John Williams, township of Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.
To my dau. Mary wife of Anthony Dennis, £100.
To my dau. Hannah, wife of Lewis Roberts, £100.
To my grandson Joseph, son of my son John William, decd., £25.
To my dau. Ann Abler, 5 shillings.
To my son Anthony Williams, all my messuages, lands, plantations, etc., and residue of my personal estate.
    Execr.: my said son Anthony.
    Dated 14 October 1737; pr. 23 August 1740.
Wits.: Robt. Jones, Caddr. ffoulke, Rachel Allen.
    [Phila. Will Book F, p. 170.]12
  • Note: It is likely, but only very weakly proven, that this John Williams is the son of William ap John. The evidence is that two women with John William's purported sisters' names witnessed his unpublished marriage certificate, and that he was at the right place at the right time. But there were other John and Katherine Williams in the area. The sisters' marriages have not been located.
