Notes

  • Immigration*: 1686; Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania
  • Note*: "Besides managing his farm of nearly one thousand acres, George Shoemaker was also a tanner, having his yards on the east side of the York Road south of Tacony Creek. He died intestate; letters were granted by Peter Evans, Register General, 5 mo. 7, 1740, to his sons Abraham and Isaac; his widow, Christiana, having renounced. The appraisement amounted to £882 9s. 1d. (Philadelphia Register's office, Administration Book D, p. 123.)"2
  • Note: Index of wills and administrations: 1740, #114, Shoemaker, George, Adm. D p. 1235
  • Note: George Shoemaker was one of the twelve persons appointed in 1711 to the commission that choose the specific route of the 'Old York Road', the major road from Philadelphia to the ferry at New Hope, the direct route to New York.2
  • Note: Abington MM Minutes: "25 d 8 mo 1714 Whereas Friends advised George Shoemaker to have his paper of Condemnation (concerning his Commiting Fornication with his house keeper) read at our General Membership Meeting at Buybery which was done accordingly"
It is not clear to this compiler whether this was George Shoemaker, the husband of Sarah Wall, or George Shoemaker, the son of Jacob, who married Rebeccah Dilworth under Abington MM in 1711.6
  • Note: Although George Shoemaker and his family were Friends, the records of the following events are not to be found in the Abington Monthly Meeting records, nor are such records noted in either of the Shoemaker books:
    - Death of Sarah (Wall) Shoemaker, about 1710
    - Marriage of George Shoemaker & Christina Brown, about 1711
    - Births of any of George Shoemaker's children, 1697 to 1725
    - Death of George Shoemaker, about 1740
On the other hand, the marriages of most of George Shoemaker's children are in Abington records.
