Notes

  • Note*: Certificates of Removal (received & issued) of Burlington MM: "12th da, 7th mo, 1709 for Mary Foster to Burlington." [This is probably the same person.]5
  • Note: Mary Foster's parentage is not certain, but as Dornan states: "It is more than probable that Mary Foster, the first wife of George Matlack was the above Mary, born 10th of 6th Month (August) 1687 daughter of William and Mary of Mansfield township." In her 1709 marriage certificate she is identified as "Mary Foster of Mansfield". She was a year or two older that George Matlack. All were Quakers. William Foster senior was of Mansfield, per son William's marriage certificate and the Quaker military list.

Asa Matlack provided additional evidence. In his 1824 journal of travels meeting Pennsylvania relatives he recounts meeting Rachael Matlack, age 74, daughter of Josiah Matlack, who says her grandfather was George Matlack and that he married Mary Foster, and names Mary's brothers and sisters: Thomas Foster, who married Delero, George Foster who lived in New Jersey, Joseph Foster who married Christian Vandegriff and settled in Pennsylvania, Charity Foster who married Abraham Vandegriff and also settled in Pennsylvania, and Rebecca foster who married Haines and lived in New Jersey. This list corresponds to the children of William & Mary Foster of Mansfield.6,7
