Notes

  • Note*: Witnessed the marriage of her daughter Elizabeth Clark to James Lord, 24th day 1st mo 1714/15.4
  • Note: It is commonly asserted that Ann the wife of Benjamin Clark was Ann Gyles daughter of James Gyles. The evidence for that assertion is not as convincing as much of the other evidence in this database.

The evidence for this assertion seen by this compiler is the abstract of Chesterfield birth records in FHL 441458. That abstract was presumably made around 1900 when the accompanying marriage abstracts were printed in NJA 22. There is nothing about the abstract itself to make it appear untrustworthy. The same information does not appear in the abstracts of Hinshaw, Craig or PMHB 9:347. To this compiler's knowledge no relevant will or marriage certificate or declaration of intent have been found.

But this assertion is a common view, supported by Gov. Charles S. Olden's 1859 letter quoted by Vinton, by the "History of Stony Brook" of unknown authorship in Chesterfield Misc. records (FHL 16513), and repeated by Vinton, Monnette and Meldrum.

Note that a different parentage is given by Hannah Whitall Smith's 1879 book, that Ann Clark was the "daughter of Thomas Giles of Brandberry, New England."
