• Note*: Thomas Whittier immigrated in 1638 on the ship 'Confidence', sailing from London, arriving Boston. He is registered as a servant, aged 18, of John Rolfe. John Rolfe was Thomas Whittier's uncle, as John Rolfe's sister Mary Rolfe was Thomas Whittier's mother.
  
  Also, John Rolfe in his 1664 will made bequests to Thomas Whittier's brothers Richard and John. (Earlier genealogists, without knowledge of these relationships, thinking the bequests were to Thomas Whittier's sons of the same names, speculated that Thomas Whittier's wife Ruth was in some way related to Rolfe.)^3,1
• Note: "He was given liberty to make three barrels of tar in [Salisbury], early in 1649. C Nb. [ Coffin's History of Newbury] states that he went from [Newbury] to [Haverhill] about 1650; oath free. 1666."¹
• Note: Thomas Whittier, then aged about 53, gave a deposition 18 Mar 1672/3. (Essex Antiquarian, 13:108)
• Note: Probate of Thomas Whittier. Ruth Whittier posted bond as administratrix (dates torn). On 27 March 1698 Ruth Whittier administratrix of the estate of her deceased husband Thomas Whittier petitioned the court regarding the division of the estate. On 8 May 1699 an account and inventory was presented, along with the division amounts for the heirs, viz., widow Ruth Whittier, children Thomas, Nathaniel Richard, Joseph, Ruth True, Susanna Morrill, Hannah Young, Elizabeth Whittier and the children of Mary Whittier wife of Benjamin Paige. On 4 Oct 1710 the division of the real estate was made, naming all the same children. Essex Co., Massachusetts, Case #29744.⁴
