  • Note*: William Lane...married 1680; joined the North church, Boston in 1681; removed 1686 to Hampton, settled on a grant of ten acres. He built a one-story house near the meeting house and the spot where the old academy stood....He died at the house of his son Joshua, 14 Feb., 1749, ae. about 90. He was said to have been "a devout and godly man," living a quiet humble life; but respected by those who knew him.4
  • Note: William Lane, tailor, resided Hampton. Of Boston, he married in Hampton 21 June 1680 Sarah Webster, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Brewer), and after birth of their first child settled in Hampton, New Hampshire, near her father. Grand jury 1695. He appears in lists: 57 - General petition of inhabitants and train soldiers 20 Feb. 1689/90, to Massachusetts, to set up a temporary government; 66 - War disbursements in 1694-1695; 336c - Province creditors, 9 Nov 1699; 399a -Military service, 1694-1696. She d. Jan 1745, age 85; he 14 Feb 1749.5
  • Note: Military service: "He was one of the soldiers of Hampton, impressed, and he served at Oyster River, from 20 Aug. to 12 Nov., 1694.
    Between 14 Nov 1695 and 8 Apr 1696 he was a soldier, one month in the garrison at Exeter and received 1 lb 4s. On 29 Oct 1696 he 'was allowed 6 shillings for garrison duty at Daniel Tilton's.' In Oct 1698 he was allowed 12s for serving two weeks in the garrison; and 12s for two weeks service as a scout under Captain J Davis in 1712."6
  • Note: On 22 Feb 1716/17 William Lane of Hampton tailor granted to his son Joshua Lane, in consideration of £3, a parcel of land in Hampton containing one acre, which had been granted to William Lane by the town of Hampton.7
